Editorial independence

The Liver Critical Care Hub is independently edited. Decisions about what to cover, how evidence is interpreted and whether content is published are made by the named editors and authors. Employers, training organisations and professional affiliations do not approve or endorse Hub content unless this is explicitly stated.

No funder, sponsor, advertiser or commercial organisation may determine topic selection, conclusions, the Clinical Takeaway or publication decisions.

Current funding

As of July 2026, the Hub is self-funded by its Founder and Editor. It receives no external grant funding, commercial sponsorship, advertising income or paid subscriptions. Paid placement is not accepted within Research, Education, Opinion or Opportunities.

If this position changes, this page will be updated and any relevant financial relationship will also be disclosed alongside affected content.

What counts as a competing interest

A competing interest is any financial or non-financial relationship that could reasonably be perceived to influence a publication. Relevant interests may include:

• employment, consultancy or advisory roles;
• honoraria, travel support or hospitality;
• research grants or industry-funded projects;
• patents, investments or other financial interests;
• leadership roles in professional, academic or advocacy organisations;
• authorship of, or direct involvement in, research being discussed; and
• strongly held professional or academic positions directly relevant to the topic.

A declared interest does not automatically prevent contribution. The purpose of disclosure is to allow readers to judge the content with appropriate context.

Authors and reviewers

Named authors and reviewers are expected to disclose relevant interests and affiliations. Disclosures will appear with the individual publication. Where no relevant interest is declared, the page may state: No relevant competing interests declared.

If an interest is sufficiently substantial to undermine confidence in an appraisal, the Hub may seek an alternative author or reviewer, add further independent review, or decide not to publish the piece.

Founder and Editor

Dr Tom Dixon has active clinical and academic interests in liver critical care, including research on bilirubin trajectories in critically ill patients with cirrhosis. If the Hub discusses research in which he has participated, that involvement will be declared prominently and the item will not be presented as an independent appraisal.

His clinical, academic and training affiliations do not fund, sponsor or formally endorse the Hub unless explicitly stated.

Commercial content and opportunities

The Hub does not currently publish advertising or sponsored editorial content. If commercial support is considered in the future, it will be clearly labelled, the financial relationship will be described, and the supporter will have no right to approve or alter editorial conclusions.

Inclusion of a job, fellowship, course, conference or other opportunity does not constitute endorsement of the organisation or offer. Listings are selected for relevance to the liver critical care community.

Undeclared interests

If a relevant interest is identified after publication, the disclosure and, where necessary, the content will be reviewed. Any material change will be recorded in accordance with the Corrections Policy.
